The frightening aspects of new media—-the public online survey that provides instant feedback. Today in class we did an online survey, evaluating our participation, the particiaption of others, and the class as whole. I was very hesitant to create feedback that peope woudl automiatically see, but I think overall it worked fairly well. People were willing to be honest, and I think fairly evaluated the class. Overall, most people learned a lot of new media tools, and enjoyed the class. Its interesting to get honest feedback about what others think about the class, and to see what they liked the most and what problems they saw. This type of exercise would be beneficial around midterms as well, in that case we could all see how we could change the structure of the class and our participation to make it better. I give major props to Professor Mills for being willing to take all the positive and negative feedback right there in class. I really wish other classes used this type of technology to provide instant feedback as well, I think it is a good way to get information.

Our class had a joint film festival with Heldman’s Politics 101 class. Their movies were much longer, and overall used less BNF footage than most of ours. It was interesting to see what they had put together– I found the most interesting one to be the Vietnam comparison film. I liked their films, but I would have liked to see them tackle the war in Afghanistan with more of the Rethink Footage. I felt that at times they used the footage more as shock value then to explain. I overall liked our class’ films better just because they seemed more focused on specific issues. Overall, it was really cool to see the many ways people have interpreted the footage, and how you can take the same footage and use it to showcase many different points. I like the BNF’s staff were pretty excited to see our work, and overall were happy with what we had done.I hope they like what we had done, and that they will show our work to others. I was really nervous to show are work, particularly in front of a Politics class, but I was glad to see our films tackled just as complex of issues as theirs. Seen altogether, the films really are a harrowing look at the conflict. After the film festival, I really took more pride in our movie, and what we had accomplished.

I came across a very interesing article about online fundraising from the NYT. Apparently, SecondLife staged a avatar walkathon 4 years a goand raised 5,000 for the American Cancer Society. They did the same thing this year and raised 27,000. This made me realize that online communities could be a great way to raise money. While FB does raise awareness through groups, etc., I think there are great fund raising possibilities throughout the web that have yet to be utilized. Target used FB to poll people about what charities they should donate too— a good way to market their business and their philanthropy. In Everquest, a Sony online game, they sold badges for people’s avatars —the proceeds of which they donated to charity. If World of Warcraft, or some of the other online rpg games all harnessed this, charities could really reap the benefits.

The best part of the article was that Lawrence Lessig was mentioned! He was quoted as saying that “For most of the history of money, people were against paper money because it wasn’t real,” he said. “But now we accept money is money, even if it isn’t real.” The distinction between real substantial money, and money online is all gone. People accept that the money they have in the online bank is what they really have. Today, some many transactions are done without actual paper money transferring. Its just documents that stand in for money–loan documents, transfer payments, etc. Its interesting to think about how we rely so heavily on non paper transactions. Just interesting to think about—and an intresting Lessig quote.

The class went to USC to learn about Korsakow. I came away with a much greater understanding for how it operates, as well as how many awesome ways one can utilize it. The presentation we were given provided a good background history about database narrative. The biggest idea I ot out of the presentation was that database films operate on a cloud structure. They are not like a choose your own adventure novel—which is precisely what I though prior. With a branching structure your lose half of your material every time a decision is made—there is no way to go back. With a cloud structure there are limitless possibilities —anything could link back to anything else. There is no direct pathway. This makes the possibilities of database films much more extensive, and gives users a much more unique experience. I think the possibilities of such an experience realy resonate with today’s culture in which everything is new and unique.

The other intersting thing he explained was computational design. The interaction of the computer and the users. The computer makes intelligent desicions, but it does not have total control. Users have control as well. Users and computers interact to create an experiance, they are reliant on one another for the proces to work. Users must stimulate the computers to create the producct.

As with the voodoo dolls movie, computers and users interact. By treating the dolls a specific way, different things happen in the movie. This stimlating interaction with the movie is much more interseting than the passive interaction we normally enocunter. One gets to intearact with the media.

I definitely think that database narratives will continue to gain prominence. They provide a unique experience, one totally different from the normal viewing experience. By forcing the user to interact, they users become more invested in the story and ultimately more entertained. It is almost like mixing video games with movies–a kind of gray area in between. It appeals to a wider range of audiances then video games though, you have to have fewer skills to be successful.

Prior to today’s reading, I had never heard of database films or how they worked. After reading about, and watching, them I think they are quite an interesting art form. To me they seem like the video version of abstract art. As they are non liner, they can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the viewer. I liked Manovich’s video, though at times it was a little difficult to tell where my attention should be turned. In today’s culture we are constantly multi-tasking, texting and typing, etc. We look at multiple interfaces at the same time. Manovich’s movie represents multitasking, but puts it all on one screen. I thought it was interesting that Manovcih said he copied his layout from places like CNN and economic news channels, where there is scrolling media at the bottom and other media images on the larger screen. He took the basis for his work from current media, and developed it into a more complex idea. I like the Korsakow video as well, as the view gets to choose some of how the final product will turn out. It reminds me of a Choose Your Own Adventure novel, but in video form. I like this type of user interaction with the interface. This type of art showcases the changes in our culture, and will contiune to gain popularity. Database films are another way for your average internet user to create something interesting and new, for every person to become an artist. In the site recreating Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera, users are able to upload their own videos into the database. Users are able to interact with database, and to contribute to the work of art. Not only is the final product a database film that changes constantly, but users have a more personal stake in it. In our culture today, everybody wants to be able to interact with every aspect of their lives. Users want to be part of the viewing experience, not just placid viewers.

Today we were asked to delve deeper into our Afghanistan project, to discuss more about how it has effected us and what we have learned. Coming into the project I felt I knew a medium range about current happenings there, but I definitely lacked knowledge of what has happened in the past. Going through the transcripts and footage, I learned a lot about what happened right after we invaded. I am also developing a greater understanding of the historical implications of our actions–especially in light of the Soviets and the mujahideen.

What struck me the most is the discussion of how we cannot go in and save people, it just does not work that way. They do not want us to save them, they want to save themselves. The US used human rights as a reason to back invasion, but we did not give them better rights. We have not greatly changed society. I watched many interviews of women saying that they do not want to be saved, and that the governments and liberal US feminist groups are not really helping at all. They are just contributing to the viewpoint that it is ok to invade a country. I really struggle with the decision of going into a country to establish more equality and better rights. When are human rights being violated enough that intervention is necessary? What has to happen? When is invasion just a hindrance not a help? When are we just pushing our Western/Orientalist views on other nations? Sometimes the choice should be easy—as in Rwanda or Bosnia. Blatant genocide should never be allowed, but more often the choice is more difficult. Most times it is not so easy. There are many countries in which women are treated as badly as in Afghanistan, for example Saudi Arabia, and yet we do not invade them. We let North Korea almost starve their population. China has a terrible human rights record—-their limit of free speech is terrifying. If we do not have the same standards for every country, can we ever hope for equality? The US should not use human rights abuses as a one supportive reason to have invaded Afghanistan, as we do not invade other countries with the same human rights abuses. When we do use HR abuse as cause, it looks like a crutch, it does not legitimize our actions to the citizens in Afghanistan or to the world as a whole. As the women in the BNF repeatedly stated, we have not helped the women’s rights movement, if anything we may have pushed back progress.

This project really made solidified my view that the US must changes how it operates in the world. We are powerful, but we have the responsibility to use that power in a way that helps citizens. We need to support the pro-human rights grassroots movements in Afghanistan. We must work from the ground up to help the citizens do what they believe is right for Afghanistan. We cannot continue to enforce our viewpoints, we have to let them make their own decisions regardless if those decisions are to our benefit.

While I believe we must change, I do not know how this change should come about. I do not know if our troops leaving will really help Afghanistan–I know in the long run it is absolutely necessary, but short-term security is a problem.

My inability to decide how I feel is why I was uncomfortable making persuasive piece for our project. If I cannot persuade myself, I surely cannot argue a strong viewpoint to other people—nor do I think I should as it would be irresponsible. I like that people will be able to learn from our project, and hopefully if we all learn for each others work, in the long run we will be able to make a better decision about how we feel. I know I am ambiguous, but I also know that ambiguity lends itself to more ambiguity. If I never have to take a stance then I am never wrong about the outcome. I think this is why Obama is having such a difficult time deciding what to do. There is no clear-cut answer, yet he has to decide and be persuasive when telling his decision to the American public. This takes more courage then I think I can muster at this point. He will have to be persuasive, and if his idea fails he will have to take responsibility. He will also be responsible for more troops and civilians killed. So maybe that is why I did not want to do a persuasive piece, I did not want that responsibility of being wrong. I do not want to support something, whether withdrawal or troop increase, that leads to more people being dead. But the issue here is that no matter what decision is made, more people will die. And that is hard to tackle, that no matter what you do it is likely to get worse before it gets better. There will still be violence, poverty and abuse….and that is just the world that we live in. I think it is easy to belive that if we pull out everything will just get so much better, that we caused all the pain that is in Afghanistan. The pain and poverty was there already. If we pull out it will still be there, if we stay it will still be there. So I guess that I conclude that it is more important to rethink how we conduct ourselves and how we can limit the destruction and death in Afghanistan, then the mere numbers of troops we employ. We must have a strategy for limiting adverse side effects of whatever plan Obama decides to go with. This is what I care more to see then an arbitrary number of troops.

A little less than a week until the due date of Remix Afghanistan. I think our group is in relatively good shape—even though we have had difficulties getting into the lab and getting the footage. People must have erased the footage, so we had to download it onto Anne’s computer. Regardless I feel that we have come up with a very specific focus– and I hope that our remix will teach people more about the rape law that they had not known. In the Rethink Video concerning women they kind of just mention the law and not actually discuss what the law actually states which is important. I feel like everybody in my group has become much more informed–which is exactly what the makers of Rethink Afghanistan were hoping. I hope that other groups have learned a lot more about the conflict. I am very interested to see what other people have come up with, particularly those who have tackled difficult questions such as “Why are we there?” I have learned a lot so far about working with media, but am still behind the curve compared to Anne. Anne has a lot of great knowledge, and I want to make sure she doesn’t do too much work on her own because the rest of the group does not know how to edit. Just important to make sure we split up the work enough.

I also like that we were able to find a lot of outside sources from the media, YouTube, etc. I like the Rethink Afghanistan footage, but it is difficult not knowing where it came from ( both source and what region) or what time period. I will update again with our final project.

There was an interesting article in the NYT today about Foursquare, apparently it is the new social networking tool. Its an application that you add to your phone, and you can post your location when you go out to clubs, resturants or to more mundane locations like the office or back home. You “check in” to places and then your friends are updated about where you are. It is intended to be more intimate than Twitter or FB. The idea is that you wil see where your friends are and meet up with them—like a GPS for your friends.

Foursquare will keep track of how often you ferquent locations, and provide advice about new places to try that fit your profile. To keep people interacting they give you “badges” for trying new places and things, and if you are the top frequenter to a location you are deemed the “mayor.” Mayors often gain freebies, so people are quite competitive for them.

I think this sounds like a really cool idea, and if I got a Blackberry or iPhone I would likely add it. I like that it is more intimate, you really only want your good friends to see you and vice versa. I also think that trying to get a mayorship or collect badges could be an entertaining way to go out and see the city.

The Taliban now have their own channel on YouTube, though prior to the news of this getting out it had relatively few hits. This news story made me think about how terrorist organizations have used media, and how one could tell an interesting historical narrative of technology and media through a timeline of terrorism. From radio communication, to video to the internet. Terrorists have always used the newest interfaces to promote their cause—I wonder how Media 2.0 will come to help them.

When thinking of media and terrorism, I first thought of the use of video. Once terrorist groups were able make videos, they could capture hostages and show video of them. While before one could have pictures of the hostages–sometimes pictures were hard to verify. Videos still are somewhat difficult to verify—but they provide a more powerful image to the world, which increases the likelihood that governments will be forced to get involved, and possibly give into some of terrorists demands. Videos also allowed groups to execute hostages and show the rest of the world their power, and what they were capable of doing. Inspiring fear in some, and acting as a recruiting tool for others.

We know that terrorists groups have used the internet to expand their following across the world. I would guess that the internet has proved crucial in expanding thier ability to carry out complex international attacks. Cell phones have also increased the communication of groups, especially since phones have become cheap, and can be difficult to track. Not only does the internet help with communication, but it definitly helps with recruitment. There are many websites devoted to fundamentalism, and I would guess there are many terrorism groups operating websites. I think this would be an interesting issue to continue to research—I’m thinking of it as a possibilty for my final project.
